Many people visit the friendly island St. Maarten for the Sun Sea and Sand. Some are often left disappointed if there is a day of rain. One might feel that there is absolutely nothing to do when raining on St. Martin. I am here to bring some good news. There is in fact numerous things to do on the island even when it’s raining. Below is just a few things I enjoy doing when I cannot do the “normal” sunny day activities! Please note that you should ALWAYS check your weather forecast before stepping out. In the Caribbean, we sometimes experience Tropical Storms and Hurricanes so you want to be sure that it won’t be risky before going out. Our rainy season starts from July to November. Please use your discretion.
Go to the Beach! Yes, this is actually one of my favorite times to go to the beach. The water seems a lot warmer and the atmosphere is cool. Also, I do not have to wear sunscreen in fear of getting sunburned. If you have kids, the sand is at the perfect consistency to build sand castles. A rainy day at the beach sometimes results in the beach being empty so that’s a plus- Having an entire beach to yourself, who doesn’t want that? I Know I do! I like peace and quiet and I grasp the opportunity on a rainy day. The sand can be a bit of a nuisance as it clings to your skin a lot more but who cares! Once you’re done swimming, you can get a full rinse off in the rain. Oh by the way, I love jogging on the beach in the rain. Such a liberating feeling. Next time you’re here and it rains, simply go to the beach!
Snorkel! You heard right! Snorkeling happens to be my ultimate favorite rainy day activity. As I mentioned earlier, the water is usually warm. Rain may be associated with murky water however just because it’s raining doesn’t necessarily means that the water is dirty. The water remains the same in most cases. This is a great time to snorkel. It is not less or more fun when it is sunny and I don’t think you should cancel your snorkel plans just for a little shower. The droplets on your back gives such a sense of calm and relaxation while you explore the beautiful underwater world.
Perfume making! Create your own perfume/cologne at the Tijon Perfumery in Grand Case. Absolutely no experience necessary as perfume technicians will guide you along the way. With over 300 amazing scents to choose from, this is definitely worth the visit and is the perfect rainy day activity. You select your scents, the perfume masters give you a briefing on the oils and then you mix and create your own perfume. In the end you get a bottle of your perfume, a Tijon gift bag valued up to 45 Euros and celebrate with some champagne. Go with a friend as I personally find it more interesting and fun being there with someone I know. The process takes about 1-3hrs.
